Alan has studied and worked in multiple countries. He obtained his bachelor degree in Physics with High Honors at UC Santa Barbara in the United States. He susequently obtained his master degree at Leiden University in the Netherlands and his PhD degree at Lund University in Sweden. He conducted scientific research in Germany and Italy. He speaks German, Dutch and Swedish to some degree.

Alan is a scientist, educator and language enthusiast with an international background. He was born and raised in Hong Kong when it was still a British Territory. His native language is Cantonese. In Hong Kong, he started learning English at a young age.
